Better Than Wolves Mod for Minecraft 1.7.2 / 1.6.4 & 1.6.2
So many great things in life first started out as jokers, and this mod carries on that tradition while simultaneously managing to add an absurd number of new features to the game. The Better than Wolves mod which originally started out as a tongue in cheek reference to an official Minecraft patch that only added wolves has blossomed into a full total conversion that is one of the most popular mods in the Minecraft world.
While Better than wolves might add almost countless new features to the game, the vast majority of those new features can be distilled into two very discrete categories:
- Mechanical Power
- Ages of Progression
Let’s Get Mechanical
Let’s tackle the most exciting one first: Mechanical power. What this really means is that the age of the windmill has come to Minecraft. By harnessing either the power of the wind through windmills or the power of rivers through the use of water wheels, players with Better Than Wolves can create intricate mechanical constructions by using nature as their power source. Even thsi massive change, however, is somewhat limited by the new Ages of Progression system.
Better Than Achievements
This system functions sort of like the traditional Minecraft achievement system, except that this one actually has a purpose. There are 7 stages at present, 6 of which reside int he age of wood, and the 7th resides with the “New Age”, depending on Steel. You progress through the ages by constructing and using different machines in particular ways, very much in the same way that real humans continuously invent machines.
Teaching you to Play
As you progress through these ages you will also begin to learn new ways to play the mod, and that’s what’s so great about Better than Wolves. Through the use of these ages, Better than Wolves does what Minecraft continually fails to do – it teaches the player how to actually play it.
Sadly, Better than Wolves suffers somewhat from it’s ambitiousness. Better than Wolves is compatible with practically no other mods, which eliminates it from one of the things that makes Minecraft mods so good – the fact that they can all add on to one another. That said, it’s a great total conversion that everyone should at least check out once.
